Two settings, Stuttgart in 1885 or 1895 and Chatham IS, present day

I was reading this on a kindle over a woman's shoulder on the bus and I'm curious to know the title. It was written in first person, and the main character in the present day was reading the diary of the guy in Stuttgart. The guy in Stuttgart was locked in a cell for a long period of time and his friend Heywood was with him for a while, but then he was taken away. The diary excerpt finished with another man wearing unfamiliar (modern?) clothes with markings (tattoos?) on his arms asking the guy- William, i think, where his book was and to keep it safe. Then the present day man stops reading and goes to have a smoke outside at night and muses about the man next door who has a wife with wildebeest hair and may possibly be nude under her robe. The present day man is 40 years old and a bachelor. And I don't know anymore because at this point the woman turned off her kindle and got off the bus. Additional information: it wasn't very well written. Thanks in advance!

YA or Kids sci-fi fiction about a time capsule found in the future

I read this when I was younger so, late 90's to early 2000's maybe. It was about a time capsule buried by a school class in the present day and it remained under the ground for a very long time, past the atomic wars (I think that's what they were called?) until it was found by a girl in the future who decides to make her own time capsule and the book is basically her diary that she's going to put into the capsule, I think. She lives a kind of boarding school and parents are only allowed to visit once a year, but human have colonised the moon and they still live in families on the moon. I remember one part where she finds the recipe to spaghetti bolognase and she wishes she could try it but all their food is artificially made and served as pills because the ground can't be grown on because of the atomic wars, or something. The A.I breaks out after an intern uses a USB drive to move some stuff around on the computer system. The A.I is like a child and reeks havoc along the east coast. It eventually hacks into a military drone. It trys to kill the other main character, the intern. It starts launching nukes. I think she runs away before her people can sacrifice her, if not she at least seriously considers doing so. I remember what the cover of the edition I read looked like though: it was predominantly purple-ish blue (almost indigo, but not quite purple enough) with the girl shown beneath the title. She was wearing bright colours, and the image was not particularly detailed.

Book Recent 2011-2012, Teen Dystopian

It started with a girl asleep and thinking about her life or a surgery of some sort that was being performed on her. also her family. is teen dystopian. He writes an advertisement in the newspaper for a dog that likes to play ball, go for walks etc. A duck answers his advertisement and comes to the boy's door disguised as a dog (cardboard ears, fake tail etc). The duck unfortunately cannot do all the things the boy required in his ad so he eventually writes the boy a letter, reveals his true identity, and leaves. The boy writes back and sweetly confirms that he doesn't care if the duck isn't a dog, he was the most perfect pet anyway (or something like that). It was a very sweet book. I hope you can help.
