I bought this book at a secondary school book fair around 2-3 years ago. It
has a whitish cover, I think it may be a marble pattern, with red writing.
It is a mystery detective story, with the narrative being in the view of a
female detective who has just come back to work. She begins working on a
case where pairs of people are kidnapped and kept in abandoned remote
locations. They remain at these locations, with no food or water until one
of them ends up killing the other, at which time the survivor is then
released. I remember the lead ending up getting kidnapped herself and her
partner does not survive. The partner who ends up dying was in love with
the lead detective, however their relationship was strained when she
suspected him of being a dirty cop.

"Eeny Meeny" by MJ Arlidge (first book of the Helen Grace series)
people are abducted, imprisoned, and left with a gun. As hunger and
thirst set in, only one walks away alive.
It’s a game more twisted
than any Detective Helen Grace has ever seen. If she hadn’t spoken with
the shattered survivors herself, she almost wouldn’t believe
Helen is familiar with the dark sides of human nature,
including her own, but this case—with its seemingly random victims—has
her baffled. But as more people go missing, nothing will be more
terrifying than when it all starts making
